LETS BE HONEST. OBAMA'S FOREIGN POLICY IS A DISASTER.
We can all remember when he was a presidential candidate that he was going to be in " dialogue mode" with Iran and the world. He was not going to follow the aggressive unilateralism of the Bush Doctrine. In short, commerce not war was to be the operative modus operandi. The United States would not be the unelected policeman of the world imposing its views on those who did not want them. But instead we have become the policeman of the world and the world is becoming a very hostile place.
He must be considered the most ruthless president ever: consider the following:
On the foreign front.
He has authorized the assassination of fighters in Somalia, Afghanistan, and Yemen on almost weekly basis.
He has openly embraced the idea of extra judicial killing of Americans abroad
He has allowed the United States to become involved in massive sectarian fight between Sunnis and Shia's in the Middle East by openly encouraging revolt in the Syria. Instead of following a more pragmatic approach by dialogue and strengthening civil society in a very civil country-Syria Obama encouraged civil war.
As a result of his failed leadership, positions are hardening, the end is not near and it will create instability across the Middle East including Saudia Arabia.
Egypt is a classic example of what to do. Don't do anything until it is clear who are the players and what agenda replace the old regime. The revolt in Turkey happened so fast that it took him by surprise so he was not able to react.
His continued insistence on Iran's lack right under the NPT treaty to create nuclear power has led to major sanctions against Iran and created the justified perception that the world is being divided in the powers and those without the right of sovereignty.
Obama has made America the unpaid, unelected, unwanted policeman of the world. Imposing our rules on other nations thereby creating a backlash that is resulting in a hardening of positions that will lead to instability across the world.
In short, Obama has reneged on his promise of a more pragmatic and less costly foreign policy.
I voted for Obama believing that he truly offered an alternative and the fact that he was a better candidate than McCain but his time at the White House is a foreign policy disaster. The world is lot more unstable with the United States as the policeman dictating policy to the rest of the world.
I believe that United States needs to take step back and do the following:
Stop the Drone assassinations. It does nothing but create more people with lost relatives who by custom now need to taker revenge. It is one thing to kill in battle and another to kill by remote control. His policy in Afghanistan is a disaster. His so called surge has not changed the political or military situation in Afghanistan. In fact, US soldiers now have to be armed 24 hours a day to protect themselves from the Afghans.
Do not become involved in Sunni Shia fight. Stop the support of the Syrian Rebels. They offer no agenda and more importantly, it is creating a whole new generation of " terrorists" The idea that a nation under internal attack is going to surrender is ludicrous. And in particular, it is very irresponsible for the United States to call for the end of a regime that brought prosperity to all of its diverse citizens. Women and men were equal under the law and it showed in the civil society. It was also one of the few, ostensibly Muslim nation. that has a large Christian minority that was not living in fear.
Obama's open encouragement of the rebels who are Sunni and who are funded by nations such as Saudia Arabia where women cannot even drive and where minority rights are not tolerated is a classic of the lack of foresight. If this approach is taken, ultimately, the rebels will lose but stability will be restored and then dialogue will take place.
If sanctions are going to work there has to be an alternative that does not take away from a nations right under the NPT to create nuclear energy. The idea of punishing a nation for something that they might do leads to inexorable conclusion that history must be the determinate. By that logic, the only nation in the world that has ever used an atomic weapon is ours truly. Does that mean that we will use it again? Iran has a right under the NPT to create nuclear energy. It has stated that it does not seek nuclear weapons. Iran must be taken at its word. Sanctions on Iran hurt us and it hurts them.
In our foreign policy approach towards Israel, we should follow the following formula. With any country in the Middle East, one first takes Israel out of the equation and set policy;2. Put Israel back in the equation and bring Israel to the conclusion of the first policy. Example: Without Israel, we would recognize Palestine as a nation today. Put Israel back in the equation and that forces us to make Israel recognize Palestine today with modifications.
MIddle East in General
The United States by default has become the protector of two of the most religious sites in the Monotheistic world Mecca and Jerusalem. This has come about by our protective relationship with Saudia Arabia and Israel. This rather unusual position allows us to be an honest broker among all faiths. We are not taking sides on either Judaism, Islam-Sunni or Shia or Christianity.
On a side note. It must be said that what Middle East lacks are Christians and Jews in countries where they would be a minority. It could be argued that the lack of diversity in Saudia Arabia, Iraq and Israel, lead to continual dissension. With that in mind, the foreign policy of the United States must be cognizant of the religious views and inclinations of the various religious groups but at all times not take sides in any religious conflict unless it is in our and only our national security interest to do so.
There is no doubt that our relationship with China is complicated by our close commercial relationship. However, it also clear that China is aggressively moving towards military equality with the United States. Second, it is looking to resolve issues regarding territory that it believes to be theirs but since they lacked power could do nothing about it. That has changed. There is a new world order and China is very much in it.
The United States security interests in the Pacific are very important and so its concentration in its policy objectives must be towards solving two very important problems. Taiwan and the Japanese Chinese straits.
On Taiwan, it is only of matter of time when China is going to determine Taiwan's fate. So, the sooner that issue is resolved diplomatically the better for Taiwan. The United States as an ally of Taiwan should be actively engaged in establishing Taiwanese rights under Mainland China rule.
On straits issue, the United States must call for dialogue and suggest a neutral forum in which the issue can be discussed.
Obama has been a disaster and there is no reason to think that he will be any better in a next term
